Mbarara and the Ankole (Nkore) Region
Western Uganda's hill city and the Nkore cattle heartland where Nkore Pearl Safaris is based.
Overview
Mbarara is western Uganda's hub, a busy university and market city sitting on a chain of hills and valleys about 270 kilometres from Kampala. It is where most journeys to the south-west either start or pass through, and it is our home. Our postal address is Nsiikye, Nyamitanga, in the old part of the city.
The surrounding Ankole region, called Nkore in the local language, was once the Ankole Kingdom, and its heritage shows in cattle. The tall, long-horned Ankole cattle are the region's cultural emblem, celebrated in poetry, song and ceremony. They also feature on our logo, where their horns rise behind a walking gorilla.
Visitors often skip Mbarara because they are headed somewhere famous. That is a missed opportunity. A morning at a cattle homestead, an afternoon at the city's markets and a hillside sundowner give you a grounded introduction to life in western Uganda before the national parks take over.
Mbarara also makes practical sense as a base. Lake Mburo National Park is about an hour away, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi are a half-day drive, and Lake Bunyonyi is a comfortable morning run, which is why we plan gorilla and wildlife trips from here instead of Kampala.

Frequently asked questions
Why start a safari in Mbarara?
Because you avoid a long first day of driving from Kampala. From Mbarara, Lake Mburo is about an hour away and Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth and Bunyonyi are all closer than from the capital.
What are Ankole cattle?
A breed with very long, curved horns, historically tied to royalty and identity in the Nkore region. They are still central to local culture and appear in many songs and ceremonies.
Is Mbarara safe for visitors?
It is a large, busy city with the usual precautions: keep valuables out of sight, use registered transport at night and ask your host for local advice. Our team can help you plan around it.
How do I get from Entebbe airport to Mbarara?
We arrange private transfers from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala. The drive is a long half-day, so many guests overnight near the airport after a late flight. Transfer prices depend on distance and vehicle, and they are shown as their own line in your quote.
